My previous urban gardening experiment the insalata caprese, sadly, did not end well. It took forever for the tomatoes to ripen, four times longer than it should have, so by the time they were ready Id completely lost interest. I found out too late that the San Francisco summer is not conducive to a hearty growth season. It was too foggy and cold for the fruit to ripen plus hauling enough water to the roof to keep the container from drying out was such a pain that they never really had enough hydration.
My window garden, however, has fared better. Its gone through several versions by now and the recent infestation of aphids has left the basil a bit bare so as a form of encouragement Ive purchased a miniature garden gnome as a herb morale booster.

Well see if it improves yield. If not maybe Ill try pink flamingos.
