It's All in the Technique
A few days ago we'd stopped by the Pacifica pier to check out the crabbing situation and noticed that very few people were using nets, most were favoring the line method. I was a bit mystified until we got close enough to see the barnacle-encrusted pylons under the pier, when the reasoning behind the reel and line choice it became crystal clear.

(crab tackle around pylons)

Pacifica pier, it's where crab nets go to die.
